2018 Chieftain

Bob Abbot – 2018 Chieftain

CHIEFTAIN OF THE GAMES 2018
Bob Abbot
Bob was born in Leith in 1939 and attended Bonnington Road Primary School then Leith Academy. He served an engineering apprenticeship with Brown Brothers, Marine Engineers, Edinburgh before moving to the National Engineering Laboratory, East Kilbride, in 1968. He later moved to MacScott Bond, Peebles, in 1977 before finally transferring to MacTaggart Scott, Naval Defence Engineers, Loanhead in 1987. He studied at the Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh, obtaining a Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering and during his career has travelled to many shipyards all over the world.
In 1962, Bob married his wife Margaret, a court dressmaker, and their son Derek was born in 1964. Derek started his career in the Hydro Hotel as a junior chef and, after moving around, became an Executive Head Chef before settling in Malta with his wife and two daughters.
Bob retired in 2006 and enjoys DIY about the house and helping his wife in the garden. He has been actively involved with Peebles Highland Games for 25 years, on the committee for most of that time and latterly as Secretary. He is also an active member of the Peebles Callants Club.
In accepting the honour of Chieftain this year, a precedent is being created as Bob’s wife was a recent Chieftain and he is doubly looking forward to the day!
