He set up in practice within the Medical Hall on Peebles High Street in 1957. From there he moved to his present home on Tweed Brae and continues his practice from The Old Rectory. Archie is well known in Peebles not only for his profession but also for his involvement in the community. He was elected to Peebles Town Council in 1912 and represented them on the Peeblesshire County Council. The re-organisation of local government led to Archie being elected to Borders Regional Council as the member for our Royal Burgh. He was the only member to serve throughout the life of the Regional Council holding many senior appointments including Chairman of Roads and Transporation, Chairman of Education and Vice Convenor of the Council. He also represented the Council in Europe at Strasbourg and Brussels. Since the formation of Scottish Borders Council Archie has continued to serve as one of Peebles Councillors. In addition to Council activities Archie has been Vice Chairman of Lothian and Borders Police Board, served for 12 years on Borders Health Board, was Chairman of the Borders Careers Company and a member of the Tweed River Purification Board. Archie is a member and Past President of The Rotary Club of Peebles where he continues to be involved with their activities. He was founder Chairman of Kingsland Primary School P.T.A. and at the other end ofthe spectrum was involved in the setting up of the Abbeyfield Home in Peebles. Archie was honoured by our Beltane Festival when in 1988 he was installed as Warden of Neidpath. Archie's involvement in both the Royal Burgh and its community makes him a worthy Chieftain. We welcome both him and his wife May and trust that they enjoy their day with us.
