2000 - Eric Gilmour

Eric was born and brought up in Peebles, the second youngest of a family of eight, and was educated at Halyrude, Kingsland and Peebles High School.

He takes on the role of Chieftain 14 years after his late brother Chief Superintendent Harry Gilmour.

Eric has always had strong links with many events and organisations in the town.

His earIiest community involvement was in 1951 at the age of five when he was chosen to be a mouse in the children's parade during the Beltane Festival.

In 1974 Eric joined the Gutterbluid Society, later becoming chairman. The Society's motto is "Deeds Not Words" and its emphasis is on projects to enhance Peebles.

Amongst other things he is a Callant, former Beltane Committee chairman, and has recently become chairman of Peebles Horticultural Society in its 150 year.

During his tîme as Beltane chairman, Eric saw the festival celebrate two centenaries - the Riding of the Marches in 1997 and the Beltane Queen Festival centenary last year.

Eric also has experience in a number of local industries - he was a young mechanic at Tweeddale Motors before moving on to work in the building trade and a local mill.

However, over the past 15 years Eric has worked hard maintaining and developing the gardens at Haystoun Estate.

He is married to Pauline, who accompanies him today, and they have two children Lyndsay and Gavin.

We welcome Eric to our games and trust that he and Pauline will enjoy their day with us.
