Throwing the 16lb hammer - Scots style

Hammer throwing originally used a sledgehammer, but over the years the normal head was replaced with a cannonball. The shaft was made more flexible and various styles and techniques were developed.

This lead to the evolution of two different events. These events are the 16lb and 22lb Scots Hammer, thrown standing style at Highland Gatherings, and the International or Wire Hammer thrown at athletic meetings.
